Pink Elephants and cute little hyraxes abound in this strange offering from Thunderkick. A middling RTP and volatility are the only drawbacks to this otherwise excellent slot.
While the phrase "pink elephants" is usually used as a euphemistic idiom for the hallucinations of drunkards, the game Pink Elephants is very much a real thing. Within a world populated by anthropomorphised rock hyraxes which are, as every lover of genetic trivia knows, the closest living relatives of the elephant family.
The heat-shimmering desert world in which these hyraxes live is the backdrop to this strange, fun, and oddly beautiful slot machine created by Thunderkick, which can be found in one of many Thunderkick casinos available online.
The aforementioned background is a fine example of scene setting, the heat warps the abandoned elephant statues, and in the foreground the reels are done with real care. The characters are cute, the designs well wrought, and all in all the slot works well at the visual level.
The music is a strange and eerie piece of music with the rich warbling of didgeridoos underlying something reminiscent of Arabian brass and strings over the top. This generates an atmosphere that is hallucinatory, and plays into both the desert setting and the heffalump based theme.
Pink Elephants is a six reel slot machine with four symbols to a reel. It operates on an any way pays system which means that any combination of matching symbols appearing anywhere on consecutive reels are a winning combination, so long as they start on the leftmost reel.
As a result there are 4,096 ways to win.
It comes with a few fairly standard features, and nothing in the gameplay is going to surprise an experienced reel-surfer. That said, what it does offer is well executed and covers all the key bases.
There is a Wild symbol which, as per usual, substitutes for all symbols except the Scatter and Mystery Scatter symbols.
In the base game the Scatter symbol will trigger the Bonus Feature if you hit three or more. The Bonus feature is made up of free spins. 7 free spins are awarded for three Scatters, up to 19 spins for hitting six Scatters.
In the Bonus feature two Scatters will add three spins with an extra 2 spins per extra Scatter up to a maximum of plus 11 spins for hitting six Scatters.
Mystery Scatters are triggered at random and result in 1-5 extra Scatters being added to the reels. They count towards triggering the Bonus.
During the Bonus rounds orbs can be collected for each high symbol. These fill up a meter for each of them, turning that symbol into pink elephants for the remaining free spins. Filling up a meter also rewards an extra free spin.
Pink Elephants’ return to player is a pretty average 96.10%.
The range of bets on the site we tested ran from a minimum of $/£/€0.10 to a maximum bet per spin of $/£/€100.00. A ten cent minimum should allow almost any low-stakes players comfortably manage their bankroll, while the maximum should satisfy those whose bankrolls are as vast and immane as the wise elephant herself.
The volatility of this game is medium. We would really like a higher volatility to match better with our preferred strategies, but while medium might not be great, it certainly isn’t bad.
Pink Elephants is a great slot at the level of visual design – creative, pretty and full of detail.
Behind the scenes the statistics are a bit more average middling volatility and RTP don’t excite us, but they also don’t turn us against the game completely.
Overall the game gets a recommendation from us, even though there are a few things that could be improved.
